Activities in Chamonix

Luge

Lie on your back, feet first on a tray with wheels in the Summer or sledge in the Winter. Both have brakes (sort of!) but the brave won’t need them as you take your pick of the two 1000m tracks with a vertical drop of 180m.

Paintball

Paintball was developed by Australian sheep farmers as a way of marking their sheep but has since developed into an international sport. You’ll battle in the woods Du Bouchet in Chamonix with the incredible mountain backdrop to add to some spectacle to the proceedings. A 2 hour game including safety equipment, gloves, semi-automatic gun, 100 balls and unlimited air. Extra balls available for £1 per 20.

Mountain Biking

Rafting

From spring onwards the mountain melt waters swell the rivers that pass through Chamonix and the surrounding valleys creating some world class rafting well into the summer months. The Mont Blanc region offers outstanding rafting territory.

Hydrospeed

If rafting seems a bit tame then maybe this is the sport for you! Hydrospeeding is basically rafting on a small plastic sled equipped with nothing but some flippers, a helmet and a wetsuit. You’ll tackle the L’Arve river that runs through Chamonix and all the way down the Valley to Sallanches 1km below.

Rock Climbing

Chamonix is the world capital and birthplace of modern climbing and mountaineering so where better to learn the basics of this thrilling and rewarding sport. This is a half-day beginner’s course for groups of 4-6 with professional instruction on a huge vertical rock face in Chamonix itself. Valley Blanche Glacier

A once in a lifetime experience for skiers and boarders with at least 4 weeks riding under their belts. First thing in the morning you’ll emerge from the Aguille de Midi cable car at 3,840 metres to be met by probably the best view in the Europe from the highest point in Europe accessible by lift. From there the only way is down and it’ll take most of the day for you and your high mountain guide(s) equipped with harnesses, ropes and avalanche transceivers to the reach the valley floor. Over the course of the day you’ll travel through 14 miles of genuine high alpine wilderness without a single piste, lift, marker or barrier between you and the mountain. You’ll cross the infamous initial arête, pass incredible ice formations, seemingly bottomless crevasses and find the freshest powder that the valley has to offer that day.

Canyoning

Husky Sledging

Hurtling through the countryside behind a pack of husky dogs is something not many have experienced; their sheer enthusiasm for the task in hand is all too evident as you reach top speed. During this quintessentially alpine activity, you'll be taught how to harness a pack of huskies together, attach them to the sledge and learn about their pack and social behaviours. Then you learn how to drive the sledge and control the dog pack so you can really appreciate husky sledging as a traditional mode of transport.

Paragliding

Paragliding or in French Parapente - one of the closest feelings to flying you will ever be able to experience. Invented just 50km from Chamonix, this incredible sport has spread all around the world to take over from hangliding as the most popular form of unpowered flight. Your instructor will take you up to one of the numerous launch spots along the valley and then after a few minutes preparation you’ll be strapped together and ready to run off the nearest cliff. 40-50 minutes of soaring above the mountains on the thermals later and you’ll land safely in the lush grass/snow covered fields in the centre of town.
